Rebuilding Lives: A Case Study of Resilience and Community Support for a Child-Headed Family

This case study examines the inspiring story of a family of seven who faced immense challenges after their mother’s untimely death. The focus is on the eldest twins,  Rose and Jane, who, at the age of 15 years, found themselves responsible for caring for their five younger siblings. This story explores the journey of their family as they navigate grief, abandonment, and adversity, while also highlighting the critical role of community organisations and support systems in their path to recovery.

Background

After the tragic loss of their mother, the twins’ father abandoned them, leaving the family in an insecure house with limited resources. Their youngest sibling fell ill, and the lack of funds for medical treatment added to their distress. However, the community rallied around them, directing them to a hospital where they encountered a partner organisation, Home Free Uganda. Through Home Free Uganda, they were connected to Child’s i Foundation, which reported their situation to the relevant authorities.

Challenges and Concerns

The family faced numerous challenges that threatened their safety and well-being. Their living conditions were alarming, with poor ventilation, termite-damaged doors, and inadequate security. They struggled with food scarcity, educational barriers, insufficient clothing and bedding, and lacked a support network. Additionally, one of the younger siblings left home in a bid to try and look for work. Another was taken into an orphanage/institution because the older siblings could not care for him.

“There are moments when we also wanted that love and guidance from an adult like other children.” Jane.

Resilience and Support

Despite their fears and uncertainties, Rose and Jane made a conscious decision to honour their mother’s wish to keep the family together. They utilised the garden left by their mother, cultivating and selling its harvest to purchase essentials like food. Through our Active Family and Community Support model, their living conditions were improved through house renovation, installation of proper windows and doors, and enhanced ventilation. The family received essential support, including food, psychosocial assistance, and the youngest child was placed in foster care to address severe malnutrition. Child’s i Foundation successfully traced for one of the missing siblings and reunited her with the family.

Rebuilding and Empowerment

To strengthen family and social relationships, the twins were linked with local leaders and neighbours in monitoring their progress. Educational opportunities were provided, with the eldest three children receiving vocational training in hairdressing and tailoring. They were equipped with necessary tools and materials such as sewing machines, fabric and hair products to start their businesses. The family also received scholastic materials, beddings, and a mobile phone for improved communication and ease in monitoring.

“We now have clients who come home and the money we get helps us to buy some essentials.” Rose.

Community Collaboration and Sustainable Solutions

Home Free Uganda, a partner organisation, played a vital role by purchasing land and building a new house for the family, ensuring secure and adequate shelter. The father’s re-engagement in his children’s lives was facilitated, and he began providing basic needs and support. The eldest three children completed their vocational training, establishing successful businesses at home. The younger children resumed their education, with their father and Home Free Uganda providing financial assistance for school fees.

Through unwavering resilience and the support of community organisations, this family of seven overcame immense challenges. Their story highlights the importance of a holistic approach to rebuilding lives, focusing on physical, emotional, and economic well-being. The twins’ determination to keep the family together, combined with community collaboration, facilitated their successful journey towards stability and a brighter future. This case study serves as an inspiring example of the power of collective action and support systems in transforming the lives of vulnerable families.

“We have experienced the joy of living and thriving together as a family. We support one another, share responsibilities, and find happiness in each other’s presence.” Rose
