“I can’t wait to see my aunties and uncles again.” These were the words of an excited eleven year old Precious who was on her way back to her family all the way in Terego district. Despite the long journey, she remained awake in anticipation of what lay ahead.
Four years ago, Precious and Matilda were left at home by their mother with a promise to return. Later in the night, a neighbour noticed that the children were all alone and she took them into her home.
Two years later, their mother had not yet returned. Left with no option, the neighbour was forced to take the children to a police station as she could no longer provide for them due to financial constraints. The Probation and Social Welfare Officer contacted Child’s i for support.
At Child’s i Foundation, we strive to ensure that children are thriving in safe and loving families. This was no different for Precious and Matilda as our dedicated social workers immediately placed the children into the foster care of Kirabo whilst their family was being traced.
For two years, our dedicated social worker Pauline worked tirelessly to trace for their family. She followed many leads until one lead led her to the family.
Back home, Precious and Matilda were met with warm hugs, smiles and tears of joy from 23 family members including clan members. The Probation and Social Welfare Officer, Florence was also present to witness this momentous moment.
She urged the family to love the children and also reminded them that it is our responsibility as a community to take care of children despite the fact that we did not give birth to them.
Precious and Matilda were officially handed over to the family by our social worker Pauline and the Probation and Social welfare Officer. “Culturally, all children belong to the clan and we are happy to have our children back home,” expressed a happy clan leader.
“I am happy to see Precious and Matilda finally back home after two years. It fills me with great joy, happiness and fulfilment as I do my work to see children reunited with their families,” shared a happy Pauline.
