Katushabe Noeline is a 42-year-old single mother of two from Buwama Town Council in Mpigi District. Like many single parents, she was faced with numerous challenges, working tirelessly to provide for her family through casual jobs, such as digging for other families.
With a monthly income of only 40,000/=, supporting her household’s basic needs like rent, school fees, and daily essentials was a constant struggle. Despite the challenges that she was faced with, she was determined to transform her life and that of her children.
After a thorough assessment of her situation, Noeline was awarded a small grant to kickstart an income-generating activity. With this financial support, she purchased two pigs, to start her own piggery farm. “I chose to venture into piggery because the profits are significant, especially when the pigs give birth to many piglets,” she explained.
To further reduce the household expenses, she approached a neighbour who kindly offered her free land for cultivation. This allowed her to grow food, which not only provided food for her and her children but also generated additional income from selling surplus produce.
In addition to this to her casual digging and selling of the surplus food produce, she has also ventured into selling pig waste as manure to farmers further diversifying her sources of income. She now earns a daily income of 20,000/= which she majorly uses to cater for her children’s needs.
“I am now able to afford my child’s school fees and scholastic materials which I was previously struggling with,”

Through her hard work, Noeline has managed to purchase a plot of land where she plans to build a home for her family. “I hope to sell the piglets at 80,000 UGX each, which will enable me to construct a house next year. My dream is to provide a peaceful and stable environment for my children,” she shares with hope.
Noeline also aspires to expand her farming efforts on her new land to create a steady income flow for her household. Her story is a powerful testament to the resilience and determination of a mother who is unyielding in her quest to ensure her children thrive.
This transformation is made possible through the Child’s i Active Family and Community Support model, which provides families like Noeline’s with economic strengthening through small grants to start their businesses. These initiatives are not just about immediate relief; they are about empowering families to build sustainable futures and preventing family separation.
