Felister: “I want all children to grow up in a safe and loving home”

Love, dedication and commitment is nothing short of what sixty-five-year-old Makabagahe Felister is as a foster parent.

Motivated by the fact that she too was raised by different families, she chose to become a foster parent four years ago. Felister felt like understood the plight of children who had been left behind by parents due to situations beyond their control given her own experience growing up.

“I lost my mother at just three years old and I was raised by different foster families who took me in at the time. This is what motivated me to become a foster parent as I would like to see all children grow up in safe and caring families,” she shares.

As part of Child’s i support to foster parents, she has undergone numerous trainings on foster care and parenting to support her incredible journey of fostering children in need. The constant check-ins by our devoted team of social workers have also been invaluable and a huge encouragement for her.

“Initially, it would make me feel sad to see the children that I have been taking care of go but with the trainings and continuous mentorship from the social workers have enabled me to understand that it is best that children are reunited with their biological families,” Felister shares.

Pauline; one of our devoted social workers shares that initially, Felister would get so attached to the children and would always be sad when they were being taken up home. “With the continuous trainings, mentorship and support I have given her, she has been able to realise that it is best that a child lives with family,” she shares

When she made the decision to become a foster parent, her family members were supportive of her decision. This is due to that fact that she has always been passionate about caring for children and had done so for many years.

Additionally, Felister shares that every child’s journey is unique and that every child that has been put into her care has left a different memory with her.

Foster parents play a pivotal role in caring for vulnerable children and providing them with a safe, loving and supportive environment. At Child’s i, we recognise the incredible work that they do and we ensure that they are supported through psychosocial support and provision of essential items to support their journey.
