In 2022, the Bukasa Kagenda Parents of Children with Disabilities and Caretakers Association was formed in response to the need for a strong support system for families raising children with disabilities (CWDs). Composed of 41 dedicated members (6 men and 35 women), the group has evolved into a dynamic peer support network, providing emotional, social, and financial assistance to families facing similar challenges.
Meeting weekly, members engage in counselling and discussions aimed at uplifting one another, sharing experiences, and exchanging strategies for better caregiving. These sessions have fostered a sense of belonging and mutual encouragement among the families, reinforcing the idea that they are not alone in their journey.
Beyond emotional support, the group has taken a proactive approach to improving the economic well-being of its members. In an effort to boost household incomes, the association introduced a savings and loan scheme, encouraging members to invest in income-generating activities (IGAs).
As a result, over 15 parents have started small businesses, including retail shops, restaurants, tailoring services, food stalls, and piggery ventures. These initiatives have significantly enhanced the financial stability of their families and enabled them to provide better care for their children.
"The access to funds enabled me to pay school fees for my children and also invest more in my business"

The group also went ahead to formulate a constitution, with elected leadership roles, including a chairperson, secretary, treasurer, disciplinary officer and mobiliser . This structure has provided the group with a solid foundation to thrive and expand its impact in the community.
By the end of 2023, the group had amassed impressive savings of UGX 9 million, with profits amounting to UGX 2.7 million. To ensure financial discipline, the group works closely with the Community Development Officer (CDO) who offers them guidance especially when it comes to decision making.
An essential milestone for theBukasa Kagenda Parents of Children with Disabilities and Caretakers Association has been being able to legally register with the Community Development Officer (CDO) at parish level. This will enable the group to benefit from government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM).
Looking ahead, the group hopes to start a joint business venture to increase the group’s income and also tap into government programs that will benefit the group and its members.
The success of this peer support group is a testament to the resilience and determination of families caring for children with disabilities. It demonstrates how, with the right support and empowerment, they can achieve financial independence, strengthen their caregiving abilities, and support their families.
Through initiatives like these, Child’s i Foundation continues to support the creation of sustainable, family-centred solutions that transform lives and communities.
