In Uganda, poverty remains a harsh reality for many families, particularly in urban settlements like Namuwongo in Kampala’s Makindye Division. The global economic crisis, worsened by the pandemic, has made life even harder. For Editor, a single mother of three, providing for her family was an uphill battle.
Editor worked tirelessly at her small vegetable stall, selling tomatoes to make ends meet. Despite her efforts, her income was barely enough. Financial stress pushed her family to the brink of separation.
Even in these tough times, Editor remained hopeful. “I promised myself I would keep going for my children,” she says. Help arrived when Rachel, a community volunteer, noticed her determination. They informed Editor about support available through our Active Family and Community Support Programme.
“Editor as a single mother of three had been struggling for a long time to fend for her children. Her business was her only source of income of income and with the right boost, it would help bring in more income for her and her children,” shared Rachel, a community volunteer.
“Editor’s family was on the verge of separation due to financial difficulties. It’s incredible to see how much she has achieved in such a short time.”

The news changed everything. Editor received capital to expand her business. She opened a small shop selling essentials like soap, sugar, and cooking oil. She also grew her vegetable stall to include onions, cabbage, and greens.
The results were life changing. “I used to earn 15,000 Ugandan shillings ($4) a day, which wasn’t enough, especially for my youngest child with health complications. Now, I earn up to 23,000 shillings a day ($6). Things are getting better, and with my mother’s help, I can take care of my children,” Editor shares.
In addition to financial support, Editor received regular visits and structured support from our social worker, Rosalyn, and community volunteer, Rachel. This support helped her develop resilience and enhance her mental well-being.
Editor hopes to build a permanent home in her ancestral village where her children can live happily. “I want to be able to provide for them without any outside help,” she says with determination.
Her story is a testament of economic strengthening and community-based support. With just a small boost, families like Editor’s can build stable and hopeful futures for their children.
