A few months ago, Halima Nassozi, a loving mother of three children aged ten, eight, and one, faced the devastating reality of possibly being separated from her children.
As a street vendor, Halima worked tirelessly to provide for her family, but as economic hardship worsened, she found it increasingly difficult to keep her small business running. “By the time we received support, my family and I were on the edge,” Halima recalls.
Without a stable income, Halima’s ability to care for her children was at risk — a reality faced by many families living in poverty. But through the Active Family and Community Support (AFS) model, a family-strengthening approach delivered by Child’s i Foundation, Halima was connected to a qualified social worker who provided mentoring and practical business support.
With start-up capital and ongoing guidance, Halima was able to rebuild her livelihood — and her family’s future. “With the start-up capital, I was able to transition from street vending to running my tea business,” she shares.
Halima began selling tea to construction workers and other customers in her community. But her determination didn’t stop there. Seeing an opportunity to grow, she expanded her business into a small retail shop, selling a variety of goods to supplement her tea sales.
“I realised that in addition to selling tea, I could generate more income with a retail shop, as people primarily drink tea in the mornings and evenings,” Halima explains.
Today, Halima’s hard work and resilience have completely transformed her family’s life. Her business now provides a steady daily income, allowing her to meet her children’s basic needs and keep them in school.
“My family and I are thriving since I started my business. I now earn up to 40,000 shillings in profits each day,”
With her growing success, Halima has also taken the important step of opening a bank account to save for her family’s future — something she never thought possible just months ago.
