A couple’s journey to family

Nsamba Bernard is a devoted father of four children: two boys and two girls from Katende in Mpigi district. He hoped to expand his family and together with his wife, they made a conscious decision to adopt.

They moved to different orphanages in search of a newborn baby to adopt until they reached out to the Probation and Social Welfare Officer to support them in identifying a child. “We have always wanted to adopt and searched in different homes but it was challenging until we sought the help of the Probation Officer,” Bernerd recalls.

Joy and excitement filled their hearts when they received a call from the PSWO informing them that a baby girl had been found for them. They were informed that they would first need to foster her for a period of one year before the legal adoption could take place.

The couple recognised the importance of being well prepared for this new chapter, especially given that they had not received comprehensive training on foster care. The PSWO informed them about a training being conducted by Child’s  i   Foundation dedicated to prospective foster parents.

Without hesitation, they signed up, understanding that knowledge would be key to providing a nurturing environment for their future child.   The training covered essential topics such as providing psychosocial support, fostering secure attachments, navigating the legal framework surrounding foster care, and helping children adjust to new environments.

Nsamba expressed his gratitude, “My wife and I did not fully understand the laws governing adoption in Uganda before this training. Now, we feel equipped and knowledgeable, especially as we embark on fostering to adopt.”

At Child’s i Foundation, we offer training support to foster parents as it is essential for preparing them to meet the unique challenges associated with fostering children. It empowers parents with knowledge, skills and resources necessary to provide a safe and loving environment for children.

Through their journey, Nsamba Bernard and his wife learned that adoption is about more than just legality; it’s about building a family rooted in love, understanding, and commitment.

Today, 6-month-old Mary is thriving in the loving embrace of the Nsamba family. Since joining them, she has blossomed into a joyful and vibrant baby, surrounded by warmth and affection. The Nsambas have created a nurturing environment where Mary is safe and cherished.
