23 children are now living in healthy and protective families

We are very proud to share with you that we reunited 23 children from 1 orphanage with their families. Many of these children had been living in the orphanage for as long as they can remember, and they were so excited to be returned to their families and welcomed back with rapture, singing and joy.

Child’s i Foundation is working with Catholic Relief Services on a research project, Keeping Children in Healthy and Protective Families, in order to understand how parenting programmes impact children from orphanages who are reintegrated back into their families.

Our 31 social workers are partnering with 33 orphanages across 9 districts, and their job is to ensure all the children are safe in their families.

Our team will be reintegrating 400 children over the next 18 months which is a huge undertaking. Many of the children have spent over 10 years in the orphanages! This makes tracing their families a challenge and once we find their families the social worker conducts an assessment to ensure the family can provide a healthy and protective home.

Once we carefully place the children in their family we do follow up visits and our partners Trans Psychosocial Organisation provide parenting training whilst Makerere University conduct the research.

Meet two members of our team Michael Mangeni and Peter Kusemererwa who want to share their experiences and favourite parts of this life changing project:
